Embarking on an exhilarating hike, we boarded the Greek intercity bus (KTEL) from Chania, setting our sights on Omalos, the gateway to the Samaria Gorge. Greeted by the towering elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level, our eyes feasted on the awe-inspiring spectacle below. Crete’s untamed essence unfolded—jagged hills, towering mountains, and age-old trees painting a portrait of raw, untamed beauty.
Navigating Nature’s Majesty
Nature’s wild embrace was balanced by the gorge’s thoughtful layout. The trail, divided into sections, offered respite at charming stone fountains and resting spots, inviting hikers to pause and soak in the surroundings. A river meandered through the gorge, guiding us across wooden bridges, while small stone towers left by previous travelers dotted our path, marking moments of passage through time.
Midday Respite in Samaria Village
Reaching the serene Samaria Village, a deserted haven nestled within the gorge, we paused to replenish our spirits and savor the delectable Chaniotiko Boureki—a zucchini and potato pita from Chania. Amidst this serene interlude, we encountered the Krikri, wild goats exclusive to Crete, adding a touch of local charm to our adventure.
