In Greece, when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, heartfelt wishes of “Chronia Polla” fill the air. This cherished phrase, meaning “many (good) years,” is a universal blessing that brightens birthdays, name days, public holidays, and especially New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Vasilopita: The Sweet Surprise
On New Year’s Eve or just after the stroke of midnight, families gather to slice into the Vasilopita, a delightful sweet cake. Hidden within is a coin that promises good fortune to the lucky finder throughout the year. In some regions, like western and eastern Macedonia, a savory pita takes center stage, often filled with savory delights like meat and leek. The prized “flouri,” or lucky coin, is tucked between layers of delicate filo pastry.
Kalanta: The joyful serenade
On New Year’s Eve, the doorbell chimes with excitement. Children, who had earlier sung to herald the birth of Jesus, return, asking “na ta poume?” (Can we sing for you?) Their cheerful songs and New Year’s wishes bring smiles and, in return, they receive sweets, coins, or fruits like mandarins and oranges. It’s a heartwarming tradition that unites young and old.
Smashing the pomegranate: A shower of luck
As the first rays of New Year’s morning light up the sky, heads of households clutch a pomegranate as they head to New Year’s mass. After the service, they return home, not with a key, but by ringing the doorbell. With their right foot forward, they enter, gripping the pomegranate. In a moment of exhilaration, they toss it to the ground, breaking it open, sending its seeds in all directions. Each seed symbolizes a wish for luck and prosperity in the upcoming year.
Gifts and traditions
In times past, gifts were exchanged on January 1st, the feast day of St. Vasilios. However, today, most children eagerly unwrap their presents on Christmas Day. Nevertheless, the joyous spirit of celebration remains, as New Year’s Day becomes a reflection of what one desires to do throughout the year.
